Pickled onions in lime juice and oregano

This type of preparation is very popular in many Latin American countries. The vegetables get a pleasantly refreshing taste and a rich red color. All that is needed for the preparation is the onions, limes and some salt. If you like, you can add a special touch to the taste with spices such as oregano.

Ingredients

  • 6 limes
  • 280 g onions, red
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 tsp oregano, or other
  • spices, to taste

Instructions

    Squeeze

  1. limes with the citrus press; approx. 180 ml lime juice is required.
  2. Peel the onions, cut in half and cut into thin half rings.
  3. Then place in a glass bowl and sprinkle with salt.
  4. Pour the lime juice over the onions and stir well.
  5. The onions approx. 30 Leave to steep for a few minutes at room temperature and stir about every 5 minutes.
  6. Oregano can be added if desired.
  7. Then stir well again.
  8. Finally, decant the onions and juice into a sealable glass.
  9. Press lightly with a fork , so that the onions are completely covered.
  10. Cover with the lid and leave in the fridge for at least 2-3 hours.
  11. The longer the onions stay in the marinade, the more intense the color will be.
